3. CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Pat Mora is an award-winning author who regularly writes children’s books that focus on the Hispanic culture. In this delightful book of haikus, Mora again achieves literary triumph. The inclusion of the history of the various foods and their place in pre-colonial times is an excellent way to share how many cultures have influenced modern day nutrition. Woven in between the haikus and additional passages is a Central American and South American history lesson.

While younger children may be satisfied to simply listen to the lively haikus, older children will be fascinated with the additional information provided in the accompanying paragraphs, which give further information on the foods. Both age brackets will be entranced by the many colors and hues in the striking illustrations.  Each food is given a full two-page spread with vivid pictures depicting multicultural children.  The children have a wide range of natural skin colors, which demonstrate the cooperation of many different racial and ethnic groups.  This balance of many cultures augments the overall tone of the book and establishes a sense of overall diversity.

Sharing the heritage of the many foods now eaten regularly by the much of the population is an excellent way to instruct young readers of the benefits of living in a diversified country. Overall, this is one of Mora’s best picture books.  The illustrations will enamor younger children, and the additional historical information will delight older children.
